USF Health’s Dr. Lucy Guerra earns Status of Latinos recognition

Lucy Guerra, MD, MPH, FACP, professor and director of the Division of General Internal Medicine in the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine, recently earned a USF Status of Latinos (SoL) Award from the Office of Multicultural Affairs.

Dr. Guerra was recognized at the group’s annual awards ceremony in recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month.  The USF SoL committee recognizes students, faculty, staff, faculty and community leaders who are contributing to the Latinx community through academic research and/or community service.

From Dr. Guerra:

“As the daughter of Cuban immigrants, I was blessed with a strong work ethic and the desire to. Make the most of every opportunity with the end goal of always paying it forward.  Throughout my years as a faculty member at USF, I’ve had the opportunity to work with many younger generations of students, particularly Latino students and see in them what others saw in me when I was their age.  Thus, I have served as a mentor for many learners interested in the health professions.  I have also worked with the USF Health BRIDGE Clinic as well as the Tampa Bay Street Medicine Refugee Clinic to offer medical care to the underserved.  During the COVID-19 pandemic, by reaching out to our community partners including Moffitt Cancer Center, Tampa General Hospital, James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital, and Hillsborough County Health Department, my team was able to open up COVID testing, treatment, and clinical trials particularly to patient populations who do not otherwise have easy access to cutting edge medical care and research.”
