Discussing Pahlawan Nusantara, UNS Malay Philology Research Group Hosting an International Conference

UNS — Malay Philology Research Group, Indonesian Language and Literature Study Program, Faculty of Cultural Studies (FIB), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, held a virtual international conference through Zoom Cloud Meeting on Thursday (29/9/2022). The conference, which takes on the ‘Pahlawan Nusantara from Various Perspectives’ theme, invited nine speakers from several countries, including Dr. Ma Tin Cho Mar of the International Intellectual College of Myanmar; Assc. Prof. Hisham Drakiria from Universiti Utara Malaysia; Dr. Annabel Teh Gallop from the British Library; Prof. Dr. Novi Anoegrajekti from Universitas Negeri Jakarta; Prof. Dr. Sahid Teguh Widodo from UNS; Prof. Dr. Bani Sudardi from UNS; Prof. Dr. Istadiyantha from UNS; Asep Yudha Wirajaya, M.A. from UNS; and Dr. Trisna Kumala Satya Dewi from UNS.

Also present at the event was the Dean of FIB UNS, Prof. Warto, who at the same time delivered a warm welcome to the event. In his remark, Prof. Warto said that the theme of the conference was in line with the vision of FIB UNS. “Hopefully, this topic can be discussed comprehensively with further elaboration through philological studies. Historically, the Southeast Asia region has many heroes, both by design, and real heroes, who can be used as references in facing present and future challenges. Hopefully, the good values raised by our national heroes can be explored and actualized in everyday life,” he explained.

Prof. Bani Sudardi, as the Chairman of the Malay Philology Research Group, Indonesian Language and Literature Study Program UNS, also hopes that this activity can explore new insights about Pahlawan Nusantara (Nusantara Heroes). Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. Istadiyanta, the Committee Chairman, said that this activity also invited students, academics, and researchers to submit papers. “There are six subthemes, namely national hero, the study of national manuscripts, literary studies, social and language studies, philosophy, and historical studies. Hopefully, through the materials delivered by the invited speakers, it can benefit all of us,” he said.

This event is divided into three sessions consisting of three speakers per session. In the first session, Prof. Dr. Sahid Teguh Widodo delivered a material entitled ‘Djawa Soegih: Exploring the Cultural Background of the Nusantara Heroes”; Prof. Dr. Novi Anoegrajekti presented the material ‘Menakjingga and the History of Rebellion in Local Perspective’; and Assc. Prof. Hisham Dzakiria delivered a material entitled ‘Inculcating Cultural Competence to Safeguard Intangible Nusantara Cultural Heritage.’

In the next session, Dr. Ma Tin Cho Mar presented material entitled ‘The Prehistoric Nusantara Concept in the Asian Boundary’; Dr. Trisna Kumala Satya Dewi delivered a topic on Galuh Candra Kirana in ‘Hikayat Galuh Digantung,’ and Asep Yudha Wirajaya, M.A., commented on Syair Nasihat (Rune of Advice) as a cultural and historical document in the colonialism era. The last session was concluded with material by Prof. Dr. Bani Sudardi, Prof. Dr. Istadiyantha, and Dr. Annabel Teh Gallop. Humas UNS
