KCLSU won the Event Award at the National Societies & Volunteering Awards (NSVA) for the Cultural Ball. The National Societies & Volunteering Awards recognise and celebrate the contributions of student volunteers and student-led societies from UK higher and further education institutions.

The first event of its kind at the university, the Cultural Ball was part of the One World Festival and a celebration of the diverse culture and community at King's. The ball provided the opportunity for nearly 700 King's students to meet, socialise and interact with people from different cultures across the university.

We had a lot of fun planning and hosting this event. We wanted to create a space where students could connect and learn more about the richness and diversity of the student population at King’s. As KCLSU officers, seeing how the last two years affected students in terms of connections and development, it was vital to host an event like this. Supported by KCLSU Student Officers Hamza Lone, VP Education (Arts & Sciences) and Arslan Zafar, VP Activities & Development, the Cultural Ball was a three-month project with students and staff from across KCLSU working together to make it possible. It was delivered in partnership with student groups across King’s in both shaping and hosting the event.

The NSVA judges highlighted how among the category’s 100 plus nominations, the Cultural Ball stood out for the project team’s real care about the event’s impact and feedback, especially in terms of student experience.

Nominations are longlisted by a panel of sector experts, then sent to the judging panels. The judging panel for each award has representation from student leaders and sector experts in volunteering, student engagement and societies.

This award provides further recognition of the work of KCLSU, creating a night where students connected and felt a part of the King’s community while highlighting the importance of creating an inclusive environment that celebrates the diversity of King’s.

The Cultural Ball is a great example of the importance of the work we do at KCLSU in giving students the opportunity to thrive in a multicultural university and in return foster a sense of belonging at King’s.
